What to expect & how to prepare

  • Ultrasound: Ultrasound is a way of creating images of the body using sound waves. In preparation for your abdominal ultrasound, you must be fasting for at least 8 hours or overnight (taking current medications with a little water is okay). For renal, pelvic or obstetrical ultrasounds, you will need to drink 32 ounces of water one hour prior to the exam and arrive with a full bladder. Wear comfortable clothes, and you may be asked to change into a gown. We may get images of you in several different positions, depending on the area we are evaluating. For some studies, we may image you upright. For musculoskeletal ultrasound, we may take images while you are moving the body part we are examining.
